Difference between a Urine Pregnancy Test and a Blood Pregnancy Test

Why would anyone want to get a blood pregnancy test taken when they can take a urine pregnancy test and do it at home? Believe it or not there are times when a woman would rather forego the urine pregnancy test altogether and take a blood pregnancy test or at least take it in conjunction with a urine pregnancy test.

Pregnancy Hormone hCG

The urine pregnancy test, whether from a doctor's office or the home pregnancy test kit works in the same manner. There are reactive agents that can detect the presence of the pregnancy hormone, hCG. The only problem is, different women have different levels of hCG and there's no way to know for sure what those levels are.

Urine pregnancy tests can only detect the hCG in certain quantities, although there is one, First Response that can detect what is almost a minute amount. However, most of the home pregnancy tests or urine pregnancy tests can only detect the hCG in more liberal amounts.

Blood Test

A blood pregnancy test, on the other hand, is different. There are two types of blood pregnancy tests, quantitative and qualitative. A qualitative blood pregnancy test will simply come back with a positive or negative result as it has detected or not detected the pregnancy hormone hCG. A quantitative blood pregnancy test will measure how much hCG is present. This is useful information as this may be the first clue that there is a multiple pregnancy.

One drawback to the urine pregnancy test that may give an especially early positive result is that 30-50 percent of all embryos that attach themselves to the uterine wall don't make it. In the past, when we couldn't know a positive result as early as we can now, we would have been none the wiser as the elimination of the embryo happens during a normal period. No one knows why this happens but not all fertilized eggs can be carried to term.

This isn't the same as a miscarriage though as it happens just within days of the embryo attaching itself to the uterine wall. Now that we can detect hCG so early, we may get a positive result and then the embryo detach leading to frustration and grief.

See Your Doctor

Regardless of your result after taking a urine pregnancy test, you may want to consider repeating the test a few days later. If the result was negative, there may have been an undetectable level of hCG present and if the result was positive, you'll want to confirm that also. If you think you are pregnant do see your doctor as soon as possible.
