There really is no such thing as an error proof pregnancy test. However, the one that attaches that label to its name, EPT, has been around the longest. EPT debuted on the American market in 1978 and has been going strong for nearly 30 years. It enjoys a fine reputation as the pioneer of the home pregnancy test.

When it first came on the market EPT stood for Early Pregnancy Test but somewhere along the line the name was changed to Error Proof Pregnancy Test. Today, there are two kinds, both of which use the midstream test stick but one of which is digital.

Digital Testing

The digital Error Proof Pregnancy Test comes with a holder that the test stick is placed into before and after testing. Once the results are ready, the user will see the words PREGNANT or NOT PREGNANT. In this way, there is absolutely no confusion about the results.

The "regular" Error Proof Pregnancy Test also uses the midstream method, only this one shows the traditional plus sign or minus sign in the result window indicating a positive or negative pregnancy test.

Although EPT, known also as the Error Proof Pregnancy Test has been a trusted brand in the home pregnancy test industry for many years, it surprises some to know that this home pregnancy test kit cannot detect the pregnancy hormone as quickly as many of the other home pregnancy tests on the market.

EPT can detect the pregnancy hormone, hCG at levels of 40 mIU, which is 40 thousandths of an International Unit. Several of the other home pregnancy tests can detect hCG at only 25 mIU and one, First Response can detect hCG at levels as little as 6.5 mIU, according to Consumer Reports.

That's not the only criteria to take into account when purchasing a home pregnancy test although it does seem to be the most important one. Ease of use, reliability and the ability to read the results are all important things to consider when considering a home pregnancy test kit.

Fertility Drugs and Home Pregnancy Tests

Women who have been taking fertility drugs which contain the hCG hormone wouldn't want a home pregnancy test that was sensitive enough to detect the smallest levels of hCG. They would need an error proof pregnancy test that was less sensitive so that by the time it picked up the hCG levels, anyone whose urine already contained small amounts of hCG could be assured she was really pregnant.

Regardless of which home pregnancy test you choose to use, notify your doctor if you are or believe you are pregnant.
