Is a Cheap Pregnancy Test as Reliable as an Expensive One

Some people think the more money they spend on something the better quality they will get. That is true to a point although with some things the pretty package or the name brand makes it more expensive but the ingredients are the same. What about home pregnancy tests? Is a cheap pregnancy test as reliable as an expensive one?

Do Brand Names Matter?

There's a lot of difference in the price of a name brand home pregnancy test and a store brand one. Several dollars as a matter of fact. Once you realize what really matters when buying a home pregnancy test you'll be able to save a lot of money.

A cheap pregnancy test works the same way as the more expensive ones. There's only one thing that really matters and that is the test's ability to detect pregnancy.

hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta. It's usually referred to by its nickname, the "pregnancy hormone." It is found in urine and in blood and when a pregnancy test detects the hCG the test comes back positive.

Different home pregnancy tests are able to detect different levels of hCG. The hormone hCG is measured in international units by the thousands. Most of the home pregnancy tests can detect hCG at between 25 and 100 mIU but if you want to find out if you are pregnant the fastest way possible using a home pregnancy test, First Response will detect hCG at 12.5 mIU.

The home pregnancy test EPT can detect hCG at 40 mIU yet Wal-Mart's store brand Equate can detect hCG at 25 mIU so there goes the theory about paying more for quality. EPT is a respected brand name and does a fine job yet Equate (generic brand), a cheap pregnancy test, will detect the lower levels of the pregnancy hormone. Equate (purple lid) also makes a home pregnancy test that will detect hCG at 100 mIU so be careful which one you get.

What to Look for

The frustrating part is that manufacturers don't like to include this information on the box so there's no way to tell before you buy the product and for some, they won't even tell you if you call the 800 number on the box. You can usually find this information online as to which home pregnancy tests detect hCG at which level. Just don't assume because it costs more, that it will tell you sooner because in this case the cheap pregnancy test can be just as good or better as the brand name one.
